God is higher than anything and anyone,
outshining everything you can see in the skies.
Who can compare with God, our God,
so majestically enthroned,
Surveying his magnificent
heavens and earth?
He picks up the poor from out of the dirt,
rescues the wretched who’ve been thrown out with the trash,
Seats them among the honored guests,
a place of honor among the brightest and best.
He gives childless couples a family,
gives them joy as the parents of children.
Hallelujah! – Psalm 113 (The Message)
This morning as I read this passage… my heart was deeply moved. I was reminded of a young lady I knew in Haiti. She was 10 or 11 when I met her. Her name was Maggie.
Maggie was born with a great deal of physical deformities… and in an attempt to “fix” her… not by doctors mind you, but in a effort to fix her… her legs were broken and burned several times. All efforts failed of course and that led whoever it was… to leave Maggie at a trash site to die. As I write this… I can’t help my eyes from misting.
Our God is so great and mighty… yet He sees us… picks us up from the dirt and elevates us as honored guests. *more tears*
Maggie was rescued by Mission of Hope… and I was blessed to meet her in September of 2003 as a Mission of Mercy artist. Maggie and I became friends. I went back several times after that initial visit and a dear friend of mine in California and I pooled some resources together and bough Maggie a guitar. I was also blessed to take her to see a doctor in Port Au Prince. Mission of Mercy had sponsored her medical needs. She was so scared… she held my hand the whole way there. I remember being in the doctors office with Maggie as she wept and whimpered during the examination… my heart physical hurt. On the way home… we stopped at a convenience store I was able to get Maggie some cookies and chocolate milk.
Sadly… Maggie passed away a couple of years later…
She no longer is bound by her sickness… she now dances in heaven with the one who gave her eternal life. Free, unencumbered… beautiful! I wrote her a song many years ago called The Dance of Heaven!
As I read this passage in Psalm 113… I couldn’t help remembering Maggie and God’s love for her.
We all are broken… bound by our shortcomings… failures and fears. Yet… our God sees us in our brokenness and pulls us up… and places us in a place if honor!
This morning I am taking the hand of Jesus… with profound humility, I receive His love as this new day begins! Will you join us?
