Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary. – Psalm 96:1-6
Back in 1980… I was learning the guitar, playing music in my band Jeremiah and slowly getting out on my own. Looking back I remember it being a season of growth, learning… adjusting and a faith strengthening experience. In many ways I look back and think to myself with great fondness… what a wonderful time in life.
I remember one moment that stands out from the season of my life. Two of my friends and I moved into a basement apartment on the west side of town… a desired part of town. I remember the wonderful sense of being on my own and the promise of a bright future. That was a feeling I felt one lonely afternoon… both of my roomates were working and I sat in a darkened room reading Psalm 96… listening to John Michael Talbot’s new album release “Come to the Quiet.” By the way… it is a perfect companion for your personal devotion time. I am actually listening to it as I write this!
As I read the words… “Sing to the Lord…” I got inspired, picked up my guitar and within minutes I had composed a new song that would become, simply… Psalm 96. While I was a singing this Psalm, a dear friend stopped by and soon I was sharing this new composition with him as he seated on my couch with His hands raised in worship. A wonderful memory to say the least!!!
Reading this passage today reminded me of that special moment in life. It is also a reminder to allow our lives to sing a new song to the world around us! To declare all that God has done for us to the world around us! It’s a new day!!! The song has begun… let us sing!
