Psalms 1

Blessed is the Man

1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Growing up in the church, I was always taught that the Book of Psalms was a musical book and that many of passages were used in a variety of songs. Being a lover of music, who eventually became a musician, I always felt drawn to the this book for that very reason.

The day came when I finally got serious about reading this book. My first intention was to find passages to inspire songwriting. So I chose to start at the beginning, Psalm 1.

Smartphone
Today, we have everything at our disposal at the push of a button in the palm of my hand. Social Media, News Apps, Music Apps, Game Apps, the list is endless.

The first line grabbed my intention immediately. Even now as I type this, I am sobered by the statement it makes, “Blessed is the Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly.” In today’s culture we are confronted with all kinds of thoughts and beliefs through the ever growing power of media. I remember a time when our television set had 3 channels to view content on. Today, we have everything at our disposal at the push of a button in the palm of my hand. Social Media, News Apps, Music Apps, Game Apps, the list is endless. Can all this access to content be the right kind of influence for a Godly life? Chances are no, but that doesn’t mean it is all bad. Of course not.

For me personally, I am broken man. Maybe more than ever before these days. I have listened to things I should not have. Both knowingly, and unknowingly. The result of such, a life of hurt, shame, and endless disappointments. In other words, there are consequences to “walking in the counsel of the ungodly.” The Psalmist notes such in verse 4, The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish. I can say that I know this first hand. But I also can I know what it is like to be “Blessed” as noted in the first verse.

In verse 2 we read, But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

I know that today’s culture is always demanding our attention, but it doesn’t have to be what shapes us into the men and women of God we are called, or suppose to be. Through a purposeful heart seeking after God can we can fully know what it means to be “Blessed” as further noted in verse 2. I know it isn’t easy… thus the reason I chose the word “purposeful.” That has to be something we must choose to do.

Today, may we all make that choice… to be like a tree planted by water… lacking nothing, and blessed abundantly.

That’s my thought for today… prayerfully asking God to lead me in everything.
